Self-Love Diet Tip #23: Finding the You Inside of Your Body

My brain has been feeling dull today and I didn’t feel like I had the energy to write a self-love post. Fortunately, my mom wrote a book all about cultivating self-love, Self-Love Diet: The Only Diet That Works, and I am taking an excerpt from her book and am using it as today’s Self-Love Diet tip. (It turns out I did have the energy to write a self-love post. Sometimes simply taking action can change one’s energy.)


My mom and I are working on creating an e-course based off of her book. I was working on that today, and I was inspired by reading the introduction leading into the chapters about the spiritual path of the Self-Love Diet; there are 7 paths in all (spiritual, body, mind, emotions, relationship, cultural and world).

The Self-Love Diet tip for today is finding the you inside of your body, which isn’t necessarily an easy task, so I’ll alter the tip to increasing your awareness to the idea that you are not your body. You are more than your body. Your body is important because it helps you live out your life however you wish to live it, but your purpose in life goes beyond your body.

The Self-Love Diet asks you to recognize that you have a purpose in this life that goes beyond your appearance. At its basic level, it’s realizing that your thoughts, feelings, actions, desires, needs and passions are not connected to your body. It’s realizing that your worth as a person does not stem from your appearance, but it comes from your spirit, which is the essence of who you are. It’s realizing that your body is important, but only to the extent that it allows you to experience life, to follow your passions, to love and to see the beauty that lives inside of you that you have to offer to the world

When you can separate your identity from your body, you can focus on what impassions you. Without being preoccupied with negative body talk, you can live in the present moment and see the opportunities around you with open eyes and an open heart. When you realize that your value is not attached to your body, you can begin to fully inhabit your body and enjoy and appreciate what it does for you and allows you to do.

The spiritual path of the Self-Love Diet is not connected to any religion or dogma; rather, it’s a practice of finding your center, your inner source of guidance and power. For you that guidance may be God, or it may be your inner wisdom and intuition.

When I am not connected to my spiritual self, I feel like an unfettered balloon. When I’m feeling anxious, down or have eaten more than is comfortable, I know something is off. That something is my spirit or inner self. In my pre-Self-Love Diet days, if anything caused me stress, I would go to food to try to soothe myself and to try to fix what wasn’t feeling right. Understanding that I am more than my body, I now realize that food cannot fix my problems. Using food to soothe myself was a distraction from confronting what was making me feel anxious, down and off balance.

When I’m having difficulty with something that needs resolution, I immediately go inward and seek my part. I ask for guidance, wisdom and a path of action. These actions come easily when I am connected, centered and grounded. When I take the time to be with myself and God, I feel as if all is right in the world, even in the midst of news that would tell me differently. By being present and aware of my spiritual nature, life with all of its joys and tribulations flows more easily. I am able to let go of life the way I believe it should be and am more accepting of what is. This allows me a freedom I hadn’t known before. I hope the spiritual aspect of the Self-Love Diet will bring abundant joy and peace into your life.

I ask that you stay open to reading the spiritual path of the Self-Love Diet, and decide for yourself what spirituality means for you. Discover who the “you” is inside of your body.
