I LOVE my willingness to talk to strangers! I DO try to talk to people who look like they are not deranged or tired or angry, but for the most part, I am willing to start a conversation with just about anyone. This did not always come easy to me. In fact, it was really really difficult for a long time, and I would sort of DARE myself to say hi to strangers in the checkout line, or at the bookstore, heart in my throat, or just anywhere, really. Turns out that people everywhere are MOSTLY kind of tickled to be talked to politely and to have someone be interested in interacting with them, and while it only SOMETIMES leads to friendships, it always makes my day and theirs more interesting, more connected, and I also take advantage of my brief acquaintances to introduce complete strangers to each other, because why not? Why not instigate some connectivity between polite people who are maybe interested in talking? I love that I’m a little bit of an instigator. It feels diabolical in that I am messing with people’s expectations of “The Outside World and How People Act” and also refreshing, like I’m poking a hole in the barriers people erect around themselves so they can see there’s more in the world, plus I get to meet new people and enjoy meeting the person inside their skin, even if only briefly. Sometimes it’s really inspiring!
