President Obama tapped into the feminine, nurturing energy last tonight when he shared his belief that same sex partners should have the same legal right to marriage as their heterosexual counter parts. Like a loving mother, he is standing up for his children who need an advocate, someone to support and fight for them to have equal access to human rights afforded to the majority in our country.
When I think of a loving mother, I envision a mother with a number of children, all with unique personalities, talents and characteristics. I imagine this mother loving all of her children and accepting and encouraging them to discover their authentic selves. This nurturing mother accepts and loves her children no matter what sexual orientation they identify with.
Tonight Obama put himself at risk for losing votes from citizens who adamantly disagree with his belief, during a time when his presidency is up for re-election. His decision to speak his truth by supporting the love between two people regardless of their gender is an example of focusing on nurturing love where you find it, and expanding the concept of what love should or should not look like.
The Love Warrior prompt for the month of May is to look for and expand on the concept of a personal loving mother to include an energetic sense of “mothering”. Instead of thinking about mothering energy only coming from our mothers, we can expand upon this concept to include mothering energy from wherever we may find it. We can get a sense of mothering from nature, from the sun, from the affection we share when petting a dog, from exchanging a smile with a stranger or sharing a hug with a friend. We can find nurturing, mothering energy all around us.
Thank you President Obama for giving us such a good example of expanding our concept of mothering energy for the month of May!
