If the shoe fits…
My name is Ja’el Daniely and I have a shopping problem.
Hi Ja’el Welcome to Shopper’s Anonymous!
I will graduate this May in debt, try to get into grad school with more debt and then live in Spain to pay off my debt! So of course it is very hard for me to walk into a mall and not purchase one thing, I have to come back with like 6!
Now I know many of you can agree that it is so hard to find a good pair of shoes when you’re looking for them RIGHT!? Right. And most of you always spend money, when you’re trying to save it, only buying things that are really necessary…like the last pair of Steve Madden heels in your size! So you talk yourself and your wallet into letting you splurge a little because you really NEED these shoes. You buy them, feel really bad later, and then start complaining about how you should have saved your money because you really need to pay your car insurance or textbooks or gas money for the week.
However, as soon as you put on those brand new shoes, and they fit perfectly! You try them on with everything, and then praise yourself because you made a good decision with buying a really nice pair of shoes, that you still NEED.
So today when I stepped up to the Macy’s register, I didn’t guilt myself into buying a nice pair of shoes or a new shirt. I enjoyed reaching into my purse to pull the blue plastic Wachovia card and I enjoyed watching the associate ask me if I wanted to sign up for a Macy’s credit card. I really felt good about my purchases today and yes I could have spent the money on something else but I work really hard and I think it’s always nice to treat yourself ONCE in a while.
And if the shoe fits? WEAR it! Don’t dwell on decisions that you have already made up in your mind. We have to live with the results of our decisions everyday so why do we always dwell on the one’s that appear to make us the happiest? So what you bought a new pair of shoes or a dress or a car, there is always going to be that one person or even yourself that says, “You could have saved that money for something else.”
But I didn’t and now what? I am happy with the decision I made because money doesn’t control my happiness. I choose to be happy and look good while I’m doing it. So the next time someone tries to guilt you into doubting a decision you’ve already made or you doubt yourself to play it safe, take a step back and think is this what I really want? And if so, go for it! Live with no regrets or hesitations!
