Al and I went to a memorial for the father of a childhood friend.
Listening to the priest and the family’s description of their father reminded me of the importance of a life fully and lovingly lived.
Carlos lived a full, adventurous, active, loving life.
When Al and I lived in the city we would go visit Anna and Carlos. They both made us feel accepted and loved just the way we were. What a gift.
It’s easy to get caught up in paying attention to our appearance. We’re bombarded with messages about the importance of striving to lose weight, getting fit, or applying age defying wrinkle creams, and coloring our hair with the shiniest colors imaginable.
We are not bombarded with messages about the importance of our relationships, or the importance of treating ourselves and others with respect, encouragement and love.
Wouldn’t it be great to see Billboards with messages asking us what we’re grateful for, or perhaps T.V. commercials saying “You don’t need to buy anything to make you better; you’re awesome just the way you are?”
Thank you Carlos for giving us that message. We felt valued and respected in your presence. The world is a better place because you were in it.
